Look for someone who has good penmenship, is in a higher level English class, like Honors English, in Highschool (cause they still remember a lot of this stuff), and can spell really well, oh yah, this person better be friendly and talkative so as not to scare or intimidate.

Look for one through your kid's school, they usually have a list of tutors that you can contact.

Maybe ask an older student, your child is friends with, like a neighbor.

try to get a teacher to recommend someone. In my opinion those tutoring centers like sylvan and huntington are wastes of money. They charge about $200 or more just for an evaluation test, which your school can do for free. then they try to push you into things you dont need. My daughter needed help with Math. Their recommendation was for twice as many hours of reading help as for math. (this for a child who has been reading fluently since she was 3.) Their explanation is that reading skills help with learning Math. I think it's baloney. I did it anyway, and she is now in 6th grade still struggling just as she was before I spent a great deal of money.

Their school should have a list of qualified tutors on file. If the child is homeschooled, any school should be happy to provide a list of tutors as well.

I would definately ask the school if they know of any tutors. My coworker was able to get a certified teacher to tutor her son, by working through the school, and it has done wonders for him.

Obviously, I would look for someone who has training in this area and likes to work with kids. I think a good place to look would be the local college. Education majors are always looking for this kind of thing.
