james joyce is the best author to have lived in the past 100 years.

probably ever.

ulysses is the best novel ever. finnegan's wake and portrait... are contenders.

[the neanderthols on here have never heard of him].

The Irish will dispute this but I don't think so. I've tried to get through "Portrait of the Artist" a few times and can't seem to do it.

I think different authors appeal to different people. Joyce isn't one of my favs, but I know lots of people that would disagree.

For sheer mastery of language, James Joyce is the best. However, for those of us who are so pre-post-modern as to value plot and character too, there's still Shakespeare.

I don't think he is 'the best author ever'. I liked his books for some reasons and disliked them for others. I don't really think you can say that one author is 'the best' because someone will always come along to change it.

I personally don't like him that much. I've never been able to get through Portrait of a Young Man.
