well divide 16 feet by 4/3 (the size in fractions)

so change it to 16x3/4 which would be

48/4=12

Just say that to divide a 16 foot board into equal 1 1/3-foot pieces, just divide. (16/x=1 1/3)

If your words divide out okay, then your numbers will too.

16 feet * 1 piece / 4/3 feet = 12 pieces. The feet cancel out.
