I teach Spanish and in level III we reviewed stem changing verbs. It was just a review; I thought all of the kids knew it. I collected a practice so I could make sure all were on target. About half of my students do not know them as well as they should. So I rearranged my lesson plans and basically I am reteaching them as we continue to plow through new material.

There are times when I switch right in the middle of something. If the kids are not understanding then it is time to switch it up; draw a chart or diagram or do a different type of practice.

everyone learns differently.

when i lecture on any subject i take into account that some people are visual in nature ... you hear these people say things like "i see what you are saying" or "i see that." others learn by hearing dialog they often say "i hear what you are saying" etc. and some learn by hands on, by doing.

i usually go with the listening group when i start with a lecture. after presenting some material i stop and notice the percentage the furrowed eyebrows.

i change directions and present the same material visually with words and diagrams.

from there when possible i construct interactive activities that involve people in the class with a hands on approach … using each row in the class (computer programming to sort 4 numbers using a particular sort method.

This was in a special ed classroom, but I taught a girl to use an abacus because she needed a hands-on way to learn addition. It was great. Another example would be allowing a student extra time on tests.
