Since the House votes to impeach and the sentence only judges by a 2/3 vote on removal of office based on that impeachment, the Chief Supreme Court Justice was not there. He is not required to attend the impeachment vote by the House.

Nice trick question btw.

The Supreme Court Justices were not part of the impeachment process. The act of impeachment was voted on and approved by the House of Representatives. There were not enough votes in the Senate to act on the impeachment.

Probably his official robes, over formal business clothes.

{EDIT} OK. Kudos to BeachBum for catching the trick question.

I missed the distinction you might be drawing between the Determination of Impeachment by the House, and the Trial of Impeachment by the Senate. The Chief Justice attends and presides over only the latter.
