Welcome to womenhood, I was nine when I started my period and it came when I was at school in the 4th grade. I was totally terrified I was dieing because I didn't know yet what a period was. Not at that age.
I am just like you my periods are never regular. A couple months after I got my period it sorta went away for 8 or 10 months and then started again. When it started again it was compleatly screwed up. I would go for weeks and weeks at a time, sometimes I would have two periods per month, and sometimes i would skip 4 or 5 months.
When I was 13 years old I had to get on birth control so that they could regulate my periods. Prior to getting on the pill I bled HEAVY for 2 solid months. I was anemic due to the blood lost and they told me to start pills right away and it would stop. I started the pills and was almost all the way through the pack and it didn't slow down or stop at all. I had to go back to the gyno. and get prescription pills to stop bleeding, it stopped but took 3 days. I was on birth control for my period from age 13 to 18 and once I stopped my periods got semi regular, however its still scary and I never start at the same time each month but I do have a period each month.

I would say that since you sound a lot like me with periods your best bet for your own health is to go to the gyno. your mother is correct and you need to go. You're periods need to be regular. There are a lot of various birth control pills to regulate your cycle and with the information you provided about your cycle more then likely they will suggest birth control to get your period regular and back on track. Its important for your health.

Trust me I was scared to death to go to the gyno back then but its nothing to be scared of. Its just a part of life for women. The concept of what will happen at the gyno is a bit scary but it doesn't hurt at all. The only part is that you are a bit uncomfortable but once the pap smear is over its over. Your exam will be fast, you will be suprised at how fast it is and how much it didn't hurt. I've had 4 gyno. doctors and based on the doctor it's painless and quick. Once you get over your first exam its nothing when you go back to other appointments. All women don't like going to the gyno but for their health its required.

When you go to your first visit they will ask you questions, like are you sexually active, if you are do you use condoms, ever had unprotected sex, family history, when your period begin and the problems with it. Then the doctor will ask you to undress as they leave the room. If your more comfortable with your mom in the room she can stay. Once you undress you put a gown on and lay on the table. Your doctor will return and ask you to place your legs in the stirrips that gives the doctor better access to your vagia. The doctor starts out feeling your lympth nodes in your neck, feel your breasts for lumps and then do the pap smear. Forecepts are placed in your vagina to open it up, no they don't hurt, you may feel the cold and hear the click. Once your vagina the doctor will swab the inside with a long qtip and then insert a finger to check your cervix. The forecepts then come out and you will clean the lubcating jelly up as you wipe with a cloth and you will get redressed. Once your dressed the doctor will then return to talk to you about your questions and concerned. The exam may take 3 minutes tops.

Your mom is giving you good advice, and you should do your best to cooperate. You might want to request that you go to a female gynecologist, as this makes some girls/women feel more comfortable. Make sure you have a good record of your periods (it sounds like you have that).

If you need an actual pelvic exam (which you may not need), you can ask that your mom stay in the room during the exam if that makes you feel better. (She can sit in a part of the room where she can't actually see your private parts.) You can ask the doctor to warm up the speculum and the lubricant so it doesn't feel so cold. Try to stay relaxed and calm. Those exams rarely hurt, but they can be scary to think about if you've never had one. Ask the doctor what you can expect during the exam, so there are no surprises. This will help you feel more calm.

There's nothing to be scared of. A gyn is just a doctor who specializes in women's problems. You might be given a pelvic examination (doctor puts on latex gloves and checks the plumbing down there) - doesn't hurt. Doc might say your body is just adjusting - or may put you on birth control pills which also have the ability to regulate your periods. Don't worry! It's not uncommon and you will be fine! And don't be afraid to ask the doc any questions you might have. It's your body and you shouldn't hesitate to clarify anything you don't understand.

It's pretty normal for girls your age to have irregular periods. In fact, it's VERY normal. Aside from your age, there are other factors that could make your periods irregular. For example, if you exercise a lot, or if you have gained or lost weight, or if your body fat percentage is very low.

So don't be scared of the gynecologist. He or she will probably tell you that you are just fine. If you are underweight, the doctor will advise you to gain weight. If you want to have regular periods, the doctor can prescribe birth control pills.

You are still young. It takes a long time to regulate. Hormones change all the time when you are young. The Gyn seems scary at your age, but it is best for you to talk to someone.
