The first line of defense is to remove the attractants: keep counters free of crumbs and sticky spots. Cover the sugar and put the honey jar in a plastic baggie. Cut off water sources such as drips or dishes left soaking overnight.
If the ant invaders persist, try these simple measures:

* Keep a small spray bottle handy, and spray the ants with a bit of soapy water.
* Set out cucumber peels or slices in the kitchen or at the ants' point of entry. Many ants have a natural aversion to cucumber. Bitter cucumbers work best.
* Leave a few tea bags of mint tea near areas where the ants seem most active. Dry, crushed mint leaves or cloves also work as ant deterrents.
* Trace the ant column back to their point of entry. Set any of the following items at the entry area in a small line, which ants will not cross: cayenne pepper, citrus oil (can be soaked into a piece of string), lemon juice, cinnamon or coffee grounds.
* Mix a half teaspoon each of honey, borox, and aspartame (Equal, Nutrasweet, etc.), in small bottles. Place bottles on their sides, with lids off, in areas of most ant activity. Ants will carry the bait back to their colonies. Important: use indoors only; must be kept away from pets and children.
* Leave a small, low wattage night light on for a few nights in the area of most ant activity. The change in light can disrupt and discourage their foraging patterns.
* Ants on the deck? Slip a few cut up cloves of garlic between the cracks.

I don't reside in the United States. Have been all over the United States an I seen a product sold in super markets, oriental stores, being it is made in China. The product is "Miraculous Insecticide Chalk". Looks 100% like the chalk used on a chalk board in school. Actually it is boric acid in chalk form. It kills cockroach and ant effectively, harmless to human being and anaimal. Very safe to use.

I have used it all over the world where I have seen ants and this product kills them including roaches. They will not return.

You take the chalk, that is if you can find it and draw a line along the edge, where you see ants, In all of your cabinets place an "X" mark with the white chalk.

The name is also in "Cantonese", being it is made in China. Small box about 3" long 1" wide, orange, yellow and black.

Try a hardware store. Ask around I am sure you can find it.

I am a doctor, clinical psychiatrist an if digested by pets or a human, no harm will come to them.

Ofcourse it is also very important that you keep the areas or your entire home clean as possible, Especially in the kitchen you don't want crumbs on the counter or elsewhere.

I have heard that if you mix equal parts borax (that powder laundry detergent) and powdered sugar, and sprinkle it all around the perimeter of your home (or wherever the ants are). It takes about a week, but the ants think its all sugar, and bring the stuff back to their nest, and when they eat the borax, it kills them. This lady also told me that the borax will not harm pets at all. Make sure you read on the box before doing this, but this is someone I work with and I dont think she would steer me wrong!

Put down a plastic lid, like off of a butter bowl, and pour some grits in it. Not cooked, just dry granules. In case you are not a southerner, you can get them at the grocery store, with the hot cereal. do not get the kind that you just add water to, get the kind that comes in a bag and has to be cooked.
The ants eat the grits and they sort of blow up in their tummies and the ants die. It won't hurt your cats if they eat them.

leave a trail of bread crumbs away from your house, replace with new crumbs everyday, they'll go...seriously.Why kill the ants? That's not right, there are more humane ways to get rid of them, killing other species is wrong...if you're so hellbent on killing them why don't you cover them with chocolate and eat them?
