When my period comes around I always use a pad. Ive only used a tampon once, but it hurt like hell. Every time I try to use one, it hurts. Is this bad? Is it normal?

The only tampons Ive ever used are junior/slim.

And if it hurts so much, does that mean it will be harder for me to have sex?

Before you try to use the tampon take some time and make sure you read all the instructions that come with it. I know .... it is a lot to read, but there is good advice in that piece of paper. Do this at a time when you are not on your period so there is no pressure. When it is time to insert the tampon, try to relax. Most likely it hurts because you are nervous. If necessary use a little lubricant such as KY jelly (not Vaseline) to make it a little more slippery. The one foot on the floor and the other on the seat of the toilet may work better than squatting. Make sure you are aiming it in the right direction - sort of at the small of your back. That might be another reason it hurt - if you weren't aiming it in quite the right direction.
These sites should help a little more. Try to relax - you will figure it out soon. Take care.

Tampons used to hurt me a lot too when I first started getting my periods, so I always used pads. I few years ago, I tried tampons again, and they felt fine. I don't really know what the difference was, it's nothing I can think of. I'd either give it some time and try in a few years or keep using them despite the pain so that it will stop hurting after a while.

I don't use tampons because they hurt me too. I'll stick with my pads. It's not like anyone but me is gonna see me down there at that time of the month, so....why bother going through the pain of a tampon...that's what I think anyway. I have been to the gynecologist many times and have never thought to ask why tampons do that to me. I've never had an S.T.D. or anything, so that can't be it, maybe we are just built differently than other women or something...Good question!

If a tampon is inserted correctly you shouldn't feel anything. If you have no abnormalities, there is no reason why you can't use tampons. From personal experience, the trick is to relax. If you are tense, it makes it harder to get it in and it may not be in the right position. If you are still having trouble and you feel comfortable with your doctor, check with him/her. Good luck.

I don't use tampons, they just creep me out and feel weird. But when you're putting one in, push it in deep down, and you don't feel a thing, keep pushing it until just the string is visible and you can't feel it inside of you. If you can feel it, it means you haven't pushed it in enough...
Also, this sounds gross, but it helps if there is a lot of blood down there, it will slide in easier. It took me like 10 practice tampons to get the hang of it, and it was so much hassle compared to a pad that i couldn't be bothered anymore.

i think, you didn't insert it much further. because if it is in the right place you wouldn't feel it much. because our vagina is more slender at the bottom part and much wider when you get deeper. try inserting it more. and relax as you do it. being tense just makes the vagina contract and it will hurt when you insert the tampon. so just relax. you'll get used to it.
also try a brand with out applicator(like o.b.)so you can direct the tampon inside.

Practise using tampons when you don't have your period. I know you'll waste a few, but you'll be more relaxed and find out what works best for you without the mess, and then more used to it when you do have your period. Most of all, be patient. Good luck!

Hey, listen all of our bodies are shaped different on the inside. Maybe right now your body is not ready for that. So your body can be rejecting it. And No!! it's not suppose to hurt like you described. Yes its bad. Yes its normal. just stick to your pads for now and as your body mature try it again. God bless :-)

Try the slimmer tampons it may be less painful for you to insert them. If that does not work just stick to pads.

It's not for everyone. At first it does hurt, but the more you practice, it gets easier and one day it just doesn't hurt. That's what happened to me when I first started using them. Try playtex gluiders...not tampax cardboard stuff. And, start with thinnest ones first.
