Go to your local Theatrical book store and pick up a ROSS Report. It should list all agencies in your area. Find a few agents that interest you, and give them a call. Most real agencies have "open call" days where you go in and have a one- on- one. They may ask for a monologue, or any prior work you may have on tape, and of course you need a good picture and resume. And no matter what DO NOT PAY ANYONE ANY MONEY!!! A legitimate agency only gets paid a commission after you do a job. It's also a good idea to ask for references. Call up some of their talent and see how well they are being represented.

Good Luck!

The best way is word of mouth. The agency that I am with now does not advertise or appear in the phone book. I called some casting directors in the area and asked which agencies they feed from. They told me and I went after them. I got signed within a week. And was working within the month.

It's been smooth sailing sense.

Now, getting an agent in the LA market? Different animal. I'm still trying to crack that one. I've been in several commercials and a couple of movies this year and still have a hard time getting contacts in LA...

If you have studied acting for many years, ask your acting teacher, to help you find a Talent Agent. Make sure your resume and headshots are up-to-date and look like you when you meet the agent.
