Lucky me will be getting $4000 dollars to spend (australian) and decided to buy me a new guitar since i'm playing on a 80 dollar cheapo crap guitar... I'm a MASSIVE fan of jimi hendrix, have been since 11 years old, and really want his sound, the guitar he played in woodstock sounded beautiful i love that sharp fat sound, and the way the stratocaster sings. I was thinking of getting either a standard 2006 american strat, or an 60th anivesery even though i haven't heard the 60th aniversy, but have heard really good reviews. As this is like moving from living in a trashcan to living in a penthouse, i would like some opinions on what pickups/guitar/strap or anything to have that nice bluesy hendrix sound! Oh and if anyone can tell me his setup?

jimi, eh?

1. fender strat...3 single-coil pickups are what jimi used! (the '70's reissues are nice and nostalgic...good tone, too...and easy truss rod adjustment, big '60's style headstock. play a 60th anniversary to hear it, man!)
- notes! shiny maple fretboards have a nice shimmery but warm tone to them...dark rosewood fretboards will give you a bit mellower warm tone...

THE GUITAR YOU CHOOSE MUST FEEL/SOUND COMFORTABLE TO YOU!

2. go with a marshall combo amp - 50-100 watts should be fine! they have good distortion

3. effects pedals - a 'dunlop uni-vibe', 'original crybaby wah-wah', and 'dallas arbiter fuzz' (it's a red disc-looking thing!)

so here it is:
1 - '70's-type fender strat (BIG '60's/'70's headstock, 3 single-coil pickups!)
2 - marshall combo amp (50-100 watts)
3 - dunlop univibe, original crybaby wah, dallas arbiter fuzz...

that right there should cost you your budget! but look on music instrument discount sites and save some dollars, man!!

hope you find your dream rig! peace!

Jimi's sound was more amp than guitar. Jim Marshall contributed much more to the signature tone than Leo Fender. Everyone pins him as the strat man because it was his most used instrument, but on the albums you find a whole menagerie of brands. And even in concert he was known to use a Flying V and a Les Paul on occasion.

If I were trying to get the ultimate Strat, I'd look at Fender's Eric Johnson signature. In my opinion, it's one of the best playing, best sounding strat style guitars in the world.

If you've got the money to blow and you crave that Jimi sound, I'd think about a couple of things. Either the EJ signature model, stock. Or consider a cheaper strat like a '57 reissue and invest in an amp upgrade. The 100 watt Marshalls today are a bit hotter than in Jimi's day, so it's not quite the same thing - but pretty close for the money. A Dr. Z's combo would be a really nice compliment to a strat as well. You might want to look into an Arbiter Fuzz Face reissue, as that was one of Jimi's favorites in the "Experience" phase.

Strats are essential for Jimi's sound. I'm not a huge fan of Fender (don't like the single-coil buzz, etc) but they do make quality instruments. Play several and find the one you like the best. I had a cheap mexican strat and I would put it up against any high dollar one. Fenders are just funny like that. They all are unique with different character, but then again, that's what makes them cool too! Good luck to you.

i would go with the standard american strat. three single coil pickups are what hendrix usually used (i never use em all so i hardly play my strat) and his amps were marshall stacks that are well over $3000 (american). if youre planning on playing shows, go with a marshall about 60 to 100 watts. if its just a hobby, 15 to 50 watts is well over enough. hendrix used feedback so much that its pretty hard to mimic the sound. practice can do it

Gibson Blueshawk or American Fender Statocaster. For a fuller, bluesier sound, try an American Fender Telecaster with a humbucker.

Get a Strat(that 60th anniv one looks sweet), a marshall(all tube one), univibe pedal, wah pedal - and play LOUD!!!!

Also take a look at the Hendrix pedal that digitech makes, it is amazing.

definitely a Gibson Les Paul Standard, nothing less!!!
try one out, maybe hooked up to a Mesa Boogie, Triple Rectifier. Check it out, and good luck.

Buy a kit and make the guitar yourself. It will be a special achievement and when you play it you will have more pride in your playing because you are playing something you made.
