Shelley=S
Michelle=M
M+10=S
S+M=50
theres your two equations... now, because S is represented by M+10, you can replace the "S" in the bottom equation:
(M+10)+M=S

You need to "translate" the statements into math.
Let s be how much money Shelley has and,
Let m be how much money Michelle has.
We can write "Together they have $50" as
s+m=50
How much more money does Shelley have? $10
This can be written as s=m+10
All you need to do now is substitute into s+m=10 and solve for the remaining variable. Use this to find out how much the other has.

S + 10 = M
S + M = 50
You could solve by substitution
Since M = S + 10
S + (S + 10) = 50
2S + 10 = 50
2S = 40
S = 20
This would make M = 30

50 - 10 divided by 2 gives you m then 50 - m = s (s- 30 m- 20)

you have S and M,
S = 10 + M.
togheter have $50 so,
s + m = 50, but s = 10 + m.
10 + m + m = 50
10 + 2m = 50
5 + m = 25
m = 20...
