I'm not talking about 22/7, but the actual answer for pi.

pi = 4 times the sum of all (-1)^k/(2k+1) with k is 0, 1, 2, ..., infinity = 4*(1-1/3+1/5-1/7+1/9-1/11...)

You have to add a lot of numbers before you get close to the reall value of pi.

Nowadays they use an very rapidly converging iteration. You calculate pi to (say) 10 places, plug the answer back into the formula, and it comes out correct to 40 places. Then do it again ... and again ... that's how you get to 40 billion places or whatever they have done by now.

The measure the circumference of a circle. They measure the diameter of the same circle. They divide the Circumference by the diameter. The answer is 3 and a continuing fraction. It has been calculated to millions of parts.
