iPods ARE mp3s - they (iPods) are simply a brand it doesn't mean that they're (iPods) any better than other mp3 players.
It's all about shoppin around if u wanna get the right one.

I'm a dad with lots of knowledge of these technologies, so maybe I can help. :-)
Several years ago I bought a Creative Labs MP3 player to use on long car trips (I had a fairly regular 10-hour drive). At the time, the iPod's batteries were a problem and the one with enough storage to fit 10+ hours of music was nearly twice the cost of my MP3 player.
Last Christmas my 15-year-old daughter wanted an iPod, so we looked into them as well as other MP3 players.
The iPod is far superior in several critical ways. First -- you can download and watch video on the latest iPod, making it a great companion for commuting, long car trips, etc. I know adults who have video iPods to which they download news videos over night, then watch them on the train/subway to work.
The iPod also has FANTASTIC support from the aftermarket, if you care about such things. This means not only lots of docking stations that you can plug it into in the home, it also means the ability to connect it directly to a car stereo and run the iPod through the stereo controls. In some cars you can even use the steering-wheel controls to work the iPod, including selecting playlists, skipping and repeating tracks, and more.
The iPod is also just a slicker device all around -- the user interface is typical Apple, very thoughtful and years ahead of even my 2004-purchased Creative Zen.
About the only thing not to like about the iPod is that it uses a file format that's unique to Apple. My daughter CLAIMS that she can no longer download MP3 songs to her iPod, but I haven't actually sat down at the computer to see if that's true. (Yes, we may be the only household in North America where the dad does computer support for the teenagers. :-) I think she's got something misconfigured in iTunes -- that's the (free) software you need to use to manage the musical content of your iPod.
One other neat advantage for the iPod is the ability to download music from Apple for a flat fee, 99 cents per song. My daughter claims she doesn't like to buy CDs because she only tends to like one or two songs from each CD. Hmmmm, so I can spend $17.99 to buy a CD from which she takes two songs, or I can spend $1.98 and download JUST THOSE TWO SONGS.
We bought her a $25 Apple gift card when we got her the iPod; it was very easy to set up -- you type a number from the back of the card into their Web site and it keeps track of how much you have left. Fantastic.
So, I have to say that if I were in the market for a personal music player today, it would be an iPod Color in 30Gb size, without a doubt. It's the way to go.

iPODs play MP3s among other things, if you're thinking of getting an MP3 player you can get more from your money if you buy something other than an iPOD. iRiver and Samsung r great!
iPODs battery isn't so good.
You can get a lot more features if you go for something else.
You can get more disk space if you go for something else.
If u think in iPOD is better you honestly have no clue what you're talking about (ur not very tech-savvy) or about what else is on the market, I own video and nano iPODS myself.

people are so stupid these day... no not you im talking about the people who said the ipod. you know people only think its good becuase its polular. but if your going to spend 300$ on somthing make it worth your while. see creative labs ltd is a sound techno company that is mainly in sound tech. so they generally would have better sound than most daps. so much better than the ipod. now the ipod which only has 2 hour of video playback while the creative zen vision m which is an mp3 player (and so is the ipod by the way)it is better than the ipod. for one it has a super gorgoes screen while the ipod has a lame 65k color screen... zen has 262k color screen. pics and videos look amazing and when yuou hook it up tou your tv the pics and videos aren blurry and fuzzy like the ipod becuase it has a output resolution of 640x480 vs ipods 320x240 so the higher the better. and also creative zen has more features such as fm radio radio recording(rocord from the radio) and also a built in microphone. and it supports up to about 6 video formats meaning you can download video and not have to convert them most of the time like the ipod. also its drag and drop on windows xo so you dont have to use any software at all like itunes.juts rip music from windows media player and drag and drop or syncronize(all you music will be added for you meaning you dont have to go one by one by one.) also it plays videos for 4 hours vs ipods 2 measly hours which isnt enough to finish a full length movie. also sound quality is better as its crisper and has warmer bass and has a custom EQ. also it comes in 5 cololrs blue, pink, blac, white, green. i have the green one. i love it!. also this player lets you fit pictures that are 12 mp or lower on it. and it has pan and zoom on pics. th eipod doesnt. i mean i can go on and on but seriously dont be a airhead izombie like everyone else andwaste your money on something that is worth it an more. the creative zen vision m. 300$ oh yah they also make other mp3 players that are very good!. http://us.creative.com/products/welcome.asp?category=213

Well generally Ipods are better. Mp3's do tend to have less memory and Ipods are much better sound quality.
As a present for your child an Ipod would be better - they are slightly more expensive but they are longer lasting. [I managed to brake my MP3 within a few months and I'm currently getting an Ipod brought for me. It does make a good present for kids - Trust me as I am one lol]

The iPod is a music/video player, while mp3 is an audio format. iPods will play mp3 files.
... unless you were thinking of the PlayStation Portable (PSP)?
