Calcualtions are based on a digital sytem of 10. As per wikipedia:
One goal of the metric system is to have a single unit for any physical quantity. All lengths and distances, for example, are measured in metres, or thousandths of a metre (millimetres), or thousands of metres (kilometres), and so on. There is no profusion of different units with different conversion factors, such as inches, feet, yards, fathoms, rods, chains, furlongs, miles, nautical miles, leagues, etc. Multiples and submultiples are related to the fundamental unit by factors of powers of ten, so that one can convert by simply moving the decimal place: 1.234 metres is 1234 millimetres, 0.001234 kilometres, etc. The use of fractions, such as 2/5 of a metre, is not prohibited, but uncommon.

The rest of the world uses the metric system. Since we are now a global economy, it would be much easier if we all used the same system of measurement. The sciences and medical fields have always used metric measurements. Metric is much easier to use, once you know the system. All the measurements are uniform, all units of 10. We have a foot, 12 inches, a yard 3 feet, a cup 8 ozs., a quart, 4 cups, a mile 5280 feet, a pound 16 ozs.,etc. Metric is transferable from weight (grams) to volume(ml) to length. We can't do that. We wouldn't have as many numbers to remember. It's much easier!

We have done already for years now. However, both the metric and customary units are still in practice-people tend to use which ever unit they feel comfortable using. Measuring jugs rulers and and the net therefore have both available. I use both comfortably- depends however what is being asked for in a recipe or given book etc. Switching between the units is rather common now. Teachers also tend to teach both measuring units as it is usually in text books and the curriculum.

it's based on ten so it's way easier to convert, it's easier to remember the units, there are like more units so you can be more exact with your measurements and stuff and SI stands for standard internationale aren't we international?
