Yes, the man did take chances, and he did love what he did, but even in this instance, I think he was doing it from the heart. When you mess with the wild, you need to respect the wild. This man dedicated practically every breath to educating and protecting and I think he did respect it - heck, he was a part of it! And nature's consequences are often life and death.
I agree - when I first heard, all I could think about was his wife and young children and the shock they must feel. This was a freak accident. Our loss.

I thought he took unnecessary chances.
But that is the life he choosed to live.
Like a policeman. They KNOW that people shoot at them.
So when one get's shot, everyone is upset.
Why is that? That was the career they choosed.
Steve kept getting close to, and many times holding, animals that do not like people. There is a lot of animals in the world to video. Why video only the dangerous ones, and up close?

i will never forget the image of steve irwin talking to the camera while sharks were in a feeding frenzy all around him while he stood in the water...the guy was a crazy kook but he was fascinating, funny and very entertaining...i kind of felt one day his luck would run out the way he took risks dealing with wildlife but i would never have guessed it would take a stingray to be the culprit....my condolences to his friends and family....he was one of a kind and his legacy will continue as his shows run on animal planet

I am reminded of a poem 'How sleep the brave?' perhaps by Lord Tennyson. When the brave sleep we do not create commotion and distrub him. Let us pass quitely by with our heavy hearts. He is exhausted after a lifetime of adventures.

Such a terrible tragedy indeed. May we all learn from this, that wild creatures can be enjoyed, but at a safe distance only.

Yes; what a shame. I will miss the adventures he took us on. He had the most wonderful personality and I loved his accent. He will be missed!
