It depends on what standards and speeds your Linksys router supports. The three most common wireless standards are 802.11 A, B and G. Older home routers will normally support the B standard while most newer ones support both B and G, and may also support A.

You need a wireless adapter for your PC that matches your router standard although getting one that supports both B and G is pretty safe. You also have two choices on types of adapters, either one that plugs into an internal slot in the PC, usually PCI, or one that plugs into a USB adapter.

Finally, you can often get the best performance by matching brands and even the series of the router with the network card. By this I mean that if your Linksys router supports wireless at boosted speeds up to 108, then your best bet is probably a matching Linksys wireless card/USB adapter. It is also easier to match security configurations with same brand products.

If you can give us the model of your Linksys router, I will be happy to see if I can give you more specific information.

You've got a good start with the Linksys Router. They're owned by Cisco, so you know they follow all of the networking standards. That being said, you can really use any wireless adapter out there except for the PC Card (PCMCIA).

USB Adapters are nice because they're easy to hook up (just plug them in), and you can take it with you to swap with other computers. They really require no technical knowledge to use. Unfortunately, they are also very limited in range. Most are only reliable to about 80-100 feet.

If you need more range, or don't want to take up a USB slot, You have to go with a PCI card. It's not too hard to take the case off of your computer, remove the slot protector, place the card in a slot, and screw it down. Then put the case back on. It's more permanent, and you don't need to worry about misplacing it. This is where you'll get the best range, and you can swap out the antenna with a more powerful one if you need more range.

Please remember, always secure your wireless network (It's not too technical, and is normally covered step by step in the instruction manual).

And (IMHO) skip anything that says D-Link on it. Their wireless PCI card is the only thing I've ever seen that can give a Blue Screen Of Death to Windows XP!

RadioShack has linksys wireless adaptors for installation in your PC (it's a wireless adaptor card). I did it in mine and it works great. You can also use Belkin and other brands. The Linksys brand wireless adaptor card should be between $39 and $49. Go to the Linksys.com website to check it out.
