If it shows the windows shut down screen then probrably, critical batteries or sumthin
But if it immediately turns off then the problem might be Overheating, Bad power lead connection, Virus, bad cnnection between laptop screen and main CPU... If its overheating, then buy a chillpad from Target, around $20... If its the cord then try removing dust, or getting a new AC lead. If its a virus, run a scan, and try starting in SAFE mode... to do this (on windows XP) right when you press the power button, tap F8 multiple times, untill a screen comes up with the option of SAFE mode.... Scroll down with the arrow keys, and select it... If this doesent work then take it to CompUSA and have them check it out... I hope i helped :)

possible overheating or bad parts, sometimes even something may not be seated properly (may not be plugged in good enough) a loose/bad power cord connection, more info would be required like - are you moving around when it happens or is the laptop sitting in one place, can you duplicate the problem by pressing or moving parts of the laptop (screen, cables, raising/pinching one end), how often does it turn off
try reseating parts that are easy to access like memory or hard drive that requires only 1 screw to remove them if you are not very technical then just take the part out and push it back firmly, make sure you hear the fans are turning on periodically during use

make sure the fans in your laptop is running and clear sometime dust blocking vents and also this has been known to happen if a laptop is on your bed or on some type of clothe heat really builds up, if it shuts down immediately I would lean towards over heating.

it could be over heating. be sure to put it on a flat surface, not on a couch, pillow, or bed. next time it does that feel if the bottom is getting hot where the bettery is. also if you have a dell or an apple they recently had a bettery recall..

Check the port that your power lead plugs into as well. If its damaged, you may be running on batteries without realising it.
