You have not copied this problem correctly, I will assume that Brenda drove 24 miles more than Jan
Let x= Jan's distance
Then Brenda = 3 * x
Then Brenda = 24 +x
So 3 * x = 24 + x
Subtract x from each side leaves
2 * x = 24
Divide each side by 2 gives x = 12
Check 24 + 12 = 3 * 12
36 = 36
Note the checking is important to make sure that you have not made an error!!!

let x=brenda
y=jan
given:
x=3y ; x=24+y
required:
y=?
solution:
let, x=3y be equation 1
let, x=24+y be equation 2
eq.1 is equal to eq. 2
therefore,
3y=24+y
3y-y=24 ,this is transposition
2y=24
then, y=24/2
y=12---->Answer!
; Jan drove 12 times!
Vulcan_Alex is also right...goodluck!

B = 3J
B = 24J
Sounds like Jan went nowhere because 0 is the only solution this equation has.

let x = Brenda
let y = Jan
x = 3y
y= x/3
x = 24y
y = x/24
The first comparison is distance. The second is number of times driven. I don't know if they are related or not.

B=3J
B-24=J
B=J+24
Therefore 3J=J+24
3J-J=24
2J=24
