An alcoholic needs to learn how Not to drink! An alcoholic is, by definition, hooked on alcohol and therefore not able to drink responsibly. So, the first order of business is to "unlearn" his/her drinking habits by not drinking alcohol. I have a friend that claims he was an alcoholic but isn't one anymore. In the past, he was caught drinking and driving so many times that he was spending weekends in jail. Now, he doesn't drink while he's working, but whenever I visit him at home he has a drink in hand. And, he's started to take his drink with him when drives somewhere. He's "careful" to let his wife drive if he thinks he has had too much to drink, but he still drinks. He's still an alcoholic and will always be one. He can only ever hope to be a Recovering alcoholic, never a former alcoholic.

Most People think that an alcoholics real problem is his inability to not over drink when he takes the first one. However that is NOT the real problem.
Sounds strange what I just said doesnt it ?
The Alcoholics REAL problem is that even though experience has shown that there is that problem, He or She still picks up the first one. The question that is most important in the study of Alcoholism is: what is it about alcohol that is so vitally important to the acoholic, that in the face of family breakdown and destruction, professional and physical deterioration, the alcoholic will still pick up the first drink?
The most successful course of action in the treatment of alcoholism even now in the 21st Century is the one laid out in the book "Alcoholics Anonymous" first published in 1937
It is the basic program that forms the AA group treatment of alcoholism. There is no other course of action in the treatment of the Disease which comes even close
It was the first text on the disease to describe alcoholism as;
" A mental obsession coupled with a physical compulsion"
The mental obsession being the most obvious thing to tackle, Because with out that the physical cant kick in.
The best description I ever heard of the difference in the way an alcoholic views alcohol compared to a social drinker went this way
" Growing up I always felt that I was 3 bricks short of a load, that there was something missing. When I had my first few drinks I found that something. It was amazing"
That man has now been continuously sober for over 45 years. He chased that illusion to skid row before finding the 3 bricks in the 12 step Program of AA
I came from an alcoholic family. Both of my parents are alcoholics both are now sober, mum 36 years, dad 19years.
I have given numerous talks to young doctors on the subject
I did a double major in Psychology in the hope of working within the system to change the medical and clinical attitudes towards alcoholism. I have made a study of alcoholism for over 30 years and kept abreast of the advances in genetic basis for the disease.
It is the most destructive disease in the world bar none. Alcoholism can directly cause the sufferer to die from one of the 3 biggest killers, Heart disease, Cancer and Sugar Diabetes (Adult onset). The only problem being that the medical profession see the latter 3 but not the real precursor to the outcome.

In my opinion, alcoholics need to learn how not to drink alcohol. Too many times I've seen drinking used as a cop-out on life.

What they have to learn is that they are alcoholics and cannot control their drinking and binging... what they have to learn is to stop drinking altogether since one drink for them is only the start of problems that will have a disastrous effect on them.
Hey, it ain't their fault but they were simply born with an addictive personality. If they can't stop on their own, I suggest a support group like Alcoholics Anonymous. I'm VERY serious about this... my mother's stepson lost his medical license because of his alcoholism and I have several cousins (including my late oldest brother) who are very talented but are also frustrated in life and they have lost fortunes while drinking!

Yeah they need to learn how to drink because they obviously have a DRINKING PROBLEM! hahahaha, get it? Because they have a drinking problem? Meaning both, they have a problem with alcohol and have a problem getting the liquid into their mouths. Ha.. ha... ha.
Um.... I don't know what you're talking about.

They need to learn how to control their drinking. Once they have that, they're not alcoholics, they controlled alcoholics.
