I have had a teller at the post office say the package must be flat (like papers) to be mailed in a flat rate envelope. I have had other tellers say as long as the envelope doesn't need to be closed with tape, it can be sent. Does anyone know the real policy on what size item can go in the flat rate envelope? Thank you!

I have searched the USPS website and cannot find anything on the policy.

"Flat rate" means that a set rate/cost is being charged for what goes into the envelope. The geometry ie flatness of the actual contents is irrelevant.

If it will fit into the envelope, that will work. The contents do not have to be "flat." BTW, post offices have window clerks, not tellers.

Their website is www.usps.gov. I don't know if the site answers your question.

go to usps.com and search for priority mail. It has to be flat I believe, but I think you can put up to 1# in there.
