is it possible to elude zombies if you just lock yourself up somewhere, turn off the lights and be very, very quiet?

Normally they don't start coming after you till they see you. Once they see you, you're toast. Also, most characters don't know there are zombies until they see them, so hiding would be unlikely to protect you, because as soon as you see them, they see you. Zombies are dead, so technically it shouldn't be about smell, because their own reek should mask any cologne or other smell our body makes. It could possibly be that the dead just have receptors for dectecting life. I would definitely believe that.
