learn the prefixes:
centi = 1/100
kilo = 1000
milli = 1/1000

thus a centimeter is 1/100 of a meter.
a kilometer is 1000 meters

there must be 100,000 centimeters in a kilometer, etc

The easiest way to do conversions is to look at the relationship between all of the prefixes to the base unit. The base unit in this case is the meter.

1 kilometers = 1000 m, since kilo means one thousand.
1 centimeter = 0.01m or 1 m = 100cm, since centi means 100.
1milimeter = 0.001m or 1m = 1000, since mili = 1000.

If you write out the equations with the units, you'll note when you do conversations, the units should cancel out if you do it correctly.

ex.

1.2mm =_ __ m ?

1.2 mm X ( 1 m / 1000mm) = 0.0012m , notice you're dividing mm by mm and are left with meters!

I hope this helps!

100 cm = 1 m = 0.001 km
1 cm = 0.01 m = 0.00001

1cm = 10 mm

So you go figure out how many to multiply by.

Cheers.

100cm = 1m and 1000m = 1km
3.9cm = .000039km = 3.9E-5km(scientific notation)

.4mm = .04cm

90000m = 9E4 = 90km

2500mm = .0025km = 2.5E-3km
