Spark Notes is right--the date is unclear but is in the Napoleonic Wars range someone else mentioned. That's what the soldiers are fighting, I think. The youngest daughter runs off with one of them--scandalous! :)

It was published in 1813 and pretty current with the times. It also takes place over the course of some months, if not a couple of years.

If you are supposed to read it for class, I recommend really reading it because it is a great book! It will be more interesting to those who are at least high school age, I think.
