MLA stands for the Modern Language Association. They publish the guidelines which show you how to format papers for the humanities (social sciences usually use the APA's guidelines). These guidelines include things like the size of the margins, where to type your name, spacing, font size, title placement, and how to document sources in a paper. For example, in an MLA paper, you use parenthetical citation of sources rather than "footnotes," and you have a "works cited" page rather than a "bibliography."
You can do a web search for MLA format or buy a handbook that demonstrates all the ways in which MLA format works in a paper. If you have a writing textbook or handbook, it may include MLA guidelines.

MLA is the format in which almost all college level essays should be written in. It basically focuses on double spacing and citing, which are the only two main key components.

MLA is absolutely the single most important thing you need to learn in college about writing an essay. You use it so you don't get accused of plagiarism. Anything you take from someone else's writing, be it a piece of information, or a quote, or a graph, you need to tell your readers who originally wrote it, because most of the time, your audience can tell that you did not write it yourself. It is important to research your information and document it correctly to have a strong basis for your paper-otherwise, you would not have much credibility if you just made up facts and figures to support your argument.
