I have a small organic vegetable and fruit garden in my yard. I don't want to hurt any animals, just keep them out of the area and from eating my small crop.

Can you afford fence around your patch? No barbed wire, but small holed, wire fence would do. If you use plastic fence they will chew thru them like hot knife thru butter.

Or, get hold of some thorny bushes, longer the thorn the better - spread them around the perimeter of the patch. First put down something sturdy about 3' apart. How large is your veg. patch - make it strong enough for them not to climb over.

No traps or any tricky things, OK?
I love animals. I hate to see them hurt.

moth balls, baby powder, cayenne pepper, ground cloves or clove oil, human hair, dog or cat hair, fox urine (yes, you can buy this), put a thin line of laundry soap around the garden...they don't like the smell

chicken wire fence might help...but they can always climb over that

plastic owl or plastic snake statues

hang aluminum foil pie plates on a string...clothesline fashion, so they'll make some and scare them away. Will not work forever though...they'll get used to the noise.

Good luck...eventually they'll try to get in again and you'll have to come up with new methods to stay ahead of the game. ;-)

chicken wire and some small stakes to cage you garden in and pests out. the sell it in the garden department at the major home repair places. a 2 foot high by 25 foot long piece is about 15 dollars. you can tie it up with string or staple to some small posts
its kinder that poisoning them or trying to trap them. you may have to place some top to keep out raccoons and squirrels though.

I'm not sure how humane it is, but you might try cayenne pepper. It's great for keeping cats from using flower beds for a litterbox. However, I heard somewhere that it can cause sinus infections. Another idea is to feed the animals and hope they won't go to the trouble of raiding your garden with "easy pickin's" available.
