Change the 3 feet to inches, remembering that there are 12 inches to one foot.

3ft.x12in./ft.=36in.

Add that result to the 16 inches to get the total inches.

1 feet = 12 inches

therefore, 3 feet = 36 inches ((3 times 12=36)

then, 36 inches + 16 inches = 52 inches

Steps:
1. convert everything to the same unit.
2. make sure all the math stays consistent with that unit.
3. since 1 ft equals 12 inches, then 3 ft must equal 36 inches. if the student doesnt understand that, take a ruler and measure out 3 feet. then mark all the inches on it, then have him/her count how many inches there are in total.
4. after u get 36 in, add it to the 16 in. notice that the calculation are in the same units. then ur done

make sure the student understands the conversion b/w inches and feet first. thats the most important part.

I am not familiar with the 5 step program however in this situation u look for the smallest common measurement...being inches (1)then convert all dimensions to inches (2) ,therefore 12" = 1" (3)therefore 3' = 12 x 3 = 36" (4) then add 16" = 36+16= 52". (5) just happens to be 5 steps? hope this helps.

I don't understand the 5 step method.
I have been doing math for to many years. And I come up with 4 ft. 4 inches.
12 inches in 1 foot.
12X3=36 inches
36+16 equals 52 inches.
52 divided by 12 equals 4 feet and 4 inches.
