I'm filling out a form for my chorus class.It asks "can you play piano? y or n" and my answer is "YES". Then it asks my skill level, but only offers two choices "accompanist novice" and Im not sure which would be the higher of the two.

Accompanist is higher. Novices are beginners. Have you SEEN the accompaniment parts in arranged music? It's insane!

An accompanist is not only much more accomplished a performer but the basic skill and proficiency level is FAR beyond that of a novice. Many professional pianists are NOT good accompanists. However, all good accompanists ARE good performers.

An "accompanist" is one who is able to play well enough to accompany singers or other instruments. This is usually a person who can read music well. A "novice" is a beginner.

because
accompanist means:a person who provides musical accompaniment (usually on a piano)
whereas novice means: a beginner.
so, accompanist , as compared to novice, probably means you at least have much moer skill than a complete beginner, and you can accompany a lead singer with a difficult piece.
