Hey - calm down people. Do you think I actuallymight be asking this because I have seen (and have been) someone who tried TOO hard to make their parents proud, to the point of letting it ruin potential peace and happiness?! - Jeez! I just wanted to know if other people fall into that trap too, since I only know the kind of family I grew up in...

I've been fortunate in that I've been able to travel to many countries and when doing so have taken time to get to know the people, the traditions, cultures, religions etc. Coupled with that I have a lot of friends from all parts of the world and drawing on my own experience I would, when generalising, agree with the point you made.

In many of the Asian and African cultures the family is held in high regard with a great deal of respect being shown especially to senior family members. This culture of respect extends beyond the boundaries of the family and is displayed within society in general.

I think also that within the Asian and African races, there is a much greater appreciation of the family and particularly of parents. Children are more indebted to their parents and want to make them proud - they're prepared to study hard and work long hours in order to make something of their lives.

Of course, this is generalisation. Not every Asian or African person is like this and there are of course many Europeans, Americans and Australians who try their hardest to make their family proud.

So... I wouldn't say Asians were the only ones trying to make their families proud as this is a prevalent trait in many African cultures as well, but I would say that Asians are the most likely to peruse this objective.

All people should try to make thier family proud, But the question you ask is on the racist side and is offensive. I know my Korean wife would be really pissed by the way worded it.
Advice here, Judge a person not a people.

You are such a stereotype. I'm asian and I never try to make my parents proud. But I'd like to, like most people would. But I just don't really care if I do or not. It's like saying black people only listen to rap. But that's not true. Evreybody tries to make their families proud, not only asians.

Of course not. It depends on the person and it depends on the family.

No. It differs from certain upbringing. Upon theory, it's just a coincidence.

There are over-achievers in every culture who are mostly motivated by trying to please their parents/family.
