I play Pearl drums, but that is my preference. They are however the worlds best selling drums. Yamaha, Tama, Dw, Ludwig etc are all good too but i don't think anything comes close to Pearl. As someone said earlier, if you buy a good brand name, your going to be getting decent drums, don't buy anything that isn't a well known name. The only famous brand name i hate is premier.I don't know if you are about to buy drums or if you are a drummer wondering what other drummers prefer, but if you are about to buy a first kit, i would recommend something from the pearl export range (the worlds best selling drum kit model). Its fairly cheap but is of semi pro standard. Remember though that 70% of a drum's sound comes from the skins. Save some of your budget and get some good quality skins, as most kits (even the best) are shipped out with rubbish skins). Ask at the drum store for the advice on the right kind for you, depending on what kind of sound you want, and make sure they change the bottom (resonant) skins as well as the top (batter) skins. I use evans EC2 skins on top (double ply with a dampening ring) and remo ambassadors on the bottom (light weight single ply).

There is no "best." It's just personal taste.

There are plenty of companies out there that have good equipment. I personally play Pearl Drums because of the double tom mount on their bass drums - I have a straight cymbal stand in one mount (for the crash) and a boom stand in the other (for the ride).

Pearl, Tama, Mapex, Premier, DW, Ludwig...it comes down to what features you're looking for in a drum set and how much you're willing to spend.

For ideas, I'd get a few copies of modern drummer - there's good articles, plus tons of ads for different brands. the web's a useful resource, too - all of the major companies have websites.

Good luck!

Yamaha make some beautiful kits and shell-packs. Their finish and build-quality is superb. However, these days, provided you stick to a known name it's difficult to buy rubbish drums anymore, they're all very good. Premier, Tama, Pearl, Mapex, Yamaha, Ludwig, DW, not sure if Remo are still made out of that compressed cardboard stuff, but even they were OK.

On a personal note, I like Zildjian cymbals, particularly Ks and K Customs.

For hand percussion I recommend Remo. They make the best form-replicas of traditional hand drums from different world cultures. The heads are durable and replicate the sounds of real hide.

there is no such thing as a best brand.

fair enough, you get certain brands that are better than others, but ultimately its down to personal choice.

but my suggestion is, get a kit like mike portnoy from dream theater. its insane!
