I hate that...Animals are ANIMALS, NOT human, what are these ignorant losers thinking?
(Yeah, yeah, " member of the family" and all that ******* bullshit. NO, they are not contributing to society in any way, they are leeches, they are ANIMALS, they don't get HUMAN names! (I have dogs and cats, so I am NOT an animal hater, but I seem to be the ONLY realistic animal owner on here!)

OMG! To Lily: I do not treat our animals badly. They are animals, of course they shouldn't be treated badly. But I guess some people are too ignorant to realise that animals are just that.

And to Jessica who can't spell "honour", pets have none...this is reserved for all our soldiers who died in the war!

I feel sorry for your animals, you must treat them terribly. Does it make you feel big to be in power over a little animal? One of my dogs is named Lily, maybe humans shouldn't be named that because it's my dogs name! I don't like you.

Whoa, you haven't even begin to understand our ecosystem and how biology over all just shot down your theory of animals don't contribute to society.

First, animals are the primary source to our environments. Humans are the secondary source. With out animals, there will not be survival on this earth whether food source or energy source. Animals are not just "pets", they are a form of keeping our environment steady. Humans are the one that destroy our environment. Not animals by natural selection and destroying by humans. What you think an animal or plant that seems to not have a function truly does have a function.

Second, names are names. What makes a human name from an animal name? What makes you think you have the right to think animals are less in the food web, even though, that isn't scientifically true.

I think that is a very ignorant thought you are getting at. Before you discuss your theory, you need to have better sources and understanding on the subject before you lecture upon it.

If you think animals are "leeches". Then just think how selfish you are showing how humans are towards animals and our environment.

If I want to name my animals a "human name" as you call it, I will. Has nothing to do with ignorance nor "power" as you seem to thrive for.

Animals are known for their heroism and their spirit for life. More than a human has...

I believe that we, as humans, are comfortable with the names we give our pets because we hear them spoken all around us day after day. These names belong to people we love and admire.

I am curious though, as a non-"ignorant loser and ONLY realistic animal owner on here", what have you named your pets?

And not to pop your little bubble, but animals do contribute to society in a very big way... There are so many things they do I can't list them all, but here is a sampling:

DOGS:
seeing eye dogs for the blind
drug sniffing dogs
bomb dogs
search & recovery (search for bodies in a mass-casualty incidents)
companions to the sick and elderly (whose relatives never visit)
guard dogs
etc...

HORSES:

therapuetic riding centers for the handicapped and disabled. This includes adults and children alike.

BIRDS:

carrier pigeons were used to send messages in war-time.
used in the mines to detect and alert the miners to deadly gas.

CATS:

to keep the pest population at bay. work great at the barn by the way...

So as you can see, animals are not "leeches" upon society.

Well if you have a ******* 'dog' name than I'd love to know what it is. Obviously animals don't call each other by names, or not that we know of, so we can only call them human names because that's what we know.

Who cares what people name their pets? Its just a name. If fact I would be embarrassed to call my dog Fluffy or something equally stupid. I would be made fun of by the members on my flyball team and by the people at the dog park. I think you need to quit worrying about what people call their pets and concentrate on making the world a better place for them! (Animals I mean.)

Well, to some people animals are friends and companiones. They love, and show love to us in ways other humans can not.
My dogs
Nibbles
Bits
Ginger
Zoey
yes, Zoey is a human name but I have never thought of it that way. I belive pets are just as high as us humans are.
It's a way diffrent people think, there choices are theres and what they choice to name there dog is there choice.
So, I guess the way you look at it, than I look at it.
I think they have enough honner to bear a human name if you ask me.
But thats just me.

I never did understand human arrogance.

There's a reason people give human names to their animals. It's called respect and honor. If you can't treat the lesser of creatures with the dignity they deserve how are we expected to treat our fellow humans better? It's well known that in families that beat their pets often abuse and beat their children and spouses. One way people honor their animals is by giving them human names. Personally I find human names boring so I find names that catch peoples' attention. I give them names that I wish humans would name themselves.

Animals do contribute to society. On a very basic level, they reduce our blood pressure by allowing us to pet them. They give us unconditional love. I know many people who would have committed suicide if they didn't have their pets to clean up after. They have clinical depression where drugs must be taken for the rest of the person's life. Pets give these people a reason to get up in the morning. Horses in riding programs have helped mentally ill people learn how to walk better because the motion of a horse walking mimics the way a human uses their hips. Dogs visiting the ill in hospitals have caused people who have never spoken in years to suddenly speak again. I've had the same experience with a cockatiel visiting a room of Alzheimer's patients.

Many farms need horses and dogs to move livestock from pasture to truck and even to slaughtering facilities. Dogs sniff out drugs. Rats in Africa are being taught to find land mines. African Grey parrots are teaching us how speech developed with the work of Dr. Irene Pepperburg and her first bird, Alex.

Regarding pets and Honor - Animals go one step farther in battle. They will serve even when humans cower in the trenches.

Oh.. and just another note: Humans ARE animals. I suggest you do a little research on evolution ;-) .

I think it's not right, because you just don't know if there can be a person around with the same name you of your dog...and it would be really embarassing for the owner of the dog, and even offensive to the other person (Something similar happened to me, even when my dog's name wasn't so common).
It's my opinion

You shouldn't have pets, you should have slaves. You need to lighten up and mind your own beeswax. Its none of your business whether or not other people give THEIR pets human names. You need to go to walmart and buy some imagination.
