do this equation:
let x be the number of hours for work
360+12x=279+16x

360-279=16x-12x
4x=81
x=20.25 hours

Answer: they have to work for 20 hours and 15 minutes to have equal pay!

Okay. So, Jackson charges $12 per hour PLUS $360 already. Same thing with Davis. $16 per hour plus an extra $279. Think of it this way. With Jackson, if you do 2 hours, then that'll be $24 because 12 x 2 is 24. Then, add the 360 they charge. That will give you 384. If you do two hours with Davis, it'll be $32 plus 279, which will add up to $311. $311 and $384 are not the same. So, you need to keep multiply every number from 3 up by the amount charged per hour with both Jackson adn Davis until you get the same total. I hope this helps you! :)

Well, you have to find out how many times the difference between 12 and 16 will equal the difference between 360 and 279. In this case, it will take 20 hours and 15 minutes:
360-279=81
16-12=4
81/4=20.25

360 - 279 = 81
16 - 12 = 4
81 divided by 4 = 20.25

The amounts will be the same after 20 and a quarter hours.

If you have a graphing calculator, enter these 2 equations:

Y1 = 360+12X
Y2 = 279+16X

The point where the 2 lines meet is the answer (the X value is your answer in time).

Let t be the time when the cost is the same.

Jackson's Cost=Davis's cost

360+12t=279+16t

Solve for t hours.

360 + 12x = 279 + 16x, where x = the amount of time until they're equal
Solve:
81 = 4x
x = 20.25 = 20hr 15min
