to give you a new look on the simpsons they are the closest thing to an average american middleclass family that a cartoon has ever been and I think people can somewhat relate to whats going on. throw a little comedy in the mix. Everyone has things happen in their life that some would never beleive could ever happen whats to say that for almost everything that happens to the simpsons couldn't happen to you or someone you know in real life. Exclude jumping springfield gorge on a skateboard and homer and all of the heart attacks bart has given him over the years.

it's popular becuase People can relate to it. This is because it proves that that’s what the average families behavioural activities and characteristics include, a negligent dad who watches TV, a too-clean mum, and the bad boy brother and smart nerdy sister.

It was edgy for it's time. One of the most successful cartoons on Primetime on network tv in the 80s. All others flopped.
