i drive a 1991 honda accord (172,000 miles) and when my car is idle, the engine seems like its going to die or something(except when warming it up) and when im going on the freeway at about 65 mph, car sounds like its trying to maintain speed or something because the sound reves up and down for a few seconds, then it stopps
i was told to change my fuel filter and i did, but it didnt help solve my problem, even though i really feel a good horsepower gain and my aftermarket muffler sounds louder than usual.
so could it be my oxygen censor, fuel injector, or maybe my oil pan gasket (my mechanic told me that there is a leak there

Poor idle after warmup is usually caused by the car running too lean , that is not enough fuel (or enough fuel and way too much air) With the engine warmed up and idling I would start spraying carb cleaner (Gumout or Berrymans works) at the various vacuum lines on the intake. The can usually comes with a nozzle extension. Use this to pinpoint the leak. It could be a melted hose, a pinhole in the power brake booster. Listen for some hissing! When the cleaner hits the leak, the engine will speed up. You didn't say if this was carbureted or fuel injected, but the twin carbed engines were known for vaccuum leaks under the intake. On those engines it was a beast to get at the leak. I hope this helps.
Good Luck,
Dave

sounds like your car is idle hunting...if it was an air leak it would most likley show up under load not idle at idle vaccumn is at max and when at load its very low so unde rload youd be low on vacumn norm so if there was a leak your more likley to feel it then, but from what i gather it sounds like either you throttle body or iac motor, the iac valve controls idle speed and when they clog or go bad the car is very hard to get to idle and can run rough. it looks like a metal cylinder with an electric connector on it, should be either on side or top of tb, try tapping it with hammer if it idles better then you know its bed and clogged. also with the plugs try wiggling all of them and listen for engine change thats the best way to check plugs, lastly oil pan gasket would not cause any type of engine idle problems. i would go with the iac motor first and then check the plugs and wires with 170k you are probally due for them anyway hondas are every 60k i think.

I hate having to respond to questions like this, yet i think that's a civic accountability to tell the uninformed. at first each time a motor vehicle makes an unusual noise, you're able to have it appeared at on the instant by a powerfuble mechanic. on your risk-free practices and mine. Secondly any motor vehicle that isn't go over 30 mph has a extreme undertaking and should no longer be operated until repaired. Thirdly I even have in my youthful and stupider days, pushed a blown engine with a rod for the period of the pan 20 miles to get it abode. you're in a position to force a heavily broken motor vehicle, yet you're purely making the undertaking worse. and ultimately, have a mechanic or perchance a pal who's immediately prone look on the motor vehicle. you purely are capturing at evening for a prognosis right here.

This is not a oil pan gasket problem..It could be an injector or O2 sensor. Have a diagnostic check run on it.

OK.
Scince you say it gives you problems AFTER it warms up, it's probably NOT a vacuum leak, EGR problem, spark plugs.
It more than likely has something to do with the engine electronics and\or sensors.
Once the engine warms up, it goes into "closed loop"
My guess is the O2 sensor.
Good luck

your oil pan gasket isnt causing this, although you should fix it. do you have a check engine light on? if so fo to a auto zone if you have one nearby and they will put your car on the computer for free and tell you what it says. also injectors in a car, almost next to never go bad, its incredibly rare for them to go bad.

go buy another car then your problem is solved.let someone else deal with the problems. I would guess Oxegen sensor if that does not solve the problem check for a blown head gasket.

If it is hesitating at highway speeds could be your EGR ports are clogged.
