Steve Irwin died whilst filming for a new television series called 'The Ocean's Deadliest'. He had been hoping to film with sharks but the murky waters off the coast of Northern Australia made it impractical so he and the film crew decided to film stingrays instead.
It was during the filming that a stingray struck him in the chest with it's 'barb'. The barb is the stingrays weapon which it very rarely uses - only when threatened. It is a hard, bony tail up to 20 inches long and coated with venom. The venom itself is extremely painful but very rarely fatal. In the case of Mr Irwin the barb punctured his chest and entered his heart and it was this injury that led to his very rapid death. The barbed tail can flick in a whip-like action and inflicts an injury similar to a stab wound from a knife.
It is thought that something must have spooked the stingray for it to have attacked. They are normally very placid animals and are sometimes referred to as the pussycats of the sea. The video footage apparantly shows Mr Irwin swimming approximately 3 feet above the stingray when it struck him.

He was filming a documentry in Portdouglas, North Queensland, when he was fatally injured by a stingray, the barb pierced his chest just near his heart, he pulled the barb out before loosing conciousness..
Very say he was 44 with wife & 2 young kids...

he was struck in the heart by a stingray. it pierced him in the heart and put a whole in his heart. he was just swimming above the stingray, and the stingray must have been scared by him and thought that he was gonna bother him. he died instantly. Steve pulled the barb(what went into his heart)out of his chest, and he went unconscious and was dying by that time. and by the time they got him to the hospital, he had already passed on. they did try and adminster CPR on him, but to no avail it didnt help him. Its a sad day all around the world. hoped this helped you.

i will never forget the image of steve irwin talking to the camera while sharks were in a feeding frenzy all around him while he stood in the water...the guy was a crazy kook but he was fascinating, funny and very entertaining...i kind of felt one day his luck would run out the way he took risks dealing with wildlife but i would never have guessed it would take a stingray to be the culprit....my condolences to his friends and family....he was one of a kind and his legacy will continue as his shows run on animal planet

He was stabbed thru the heart with the poisonous spine of a stingray.

He was filming sting rays, and got too close to one. The sting ray's barb pierced his heart, and killed him with the poison. This is rare--usually the barb get's you hand or leg, and the anitdote is fast and almost alwyas saves your life. It was a freak accident.

yes. he was stabbed in the heart with a barb from a sting ray tail. He died on camera after he pulled the barb out himself.
