so that when you die young your children will have no father for the rest of their life? i don't think that's very smart.... (steve irwin)

everyone so far, has NOT answered my question, i didn't ask if stingrays are deadly (they are) i didn't ask if it was his life or not, (it isn't if he has a family that he should care about) and i'm not insulting anyone in particular, just asking a simple question that some people don't want to answer. if someone were to go riding a motorcyle down the road without a helmet in the pouring rain at 80 mph, you would call him stupid if he wrecked and died, wouldn't you?

heather, all those professions you mentioned are honorable, and dangerous, playing with snakes is not, and pilots jobs are not that dangerous, look up stats on it.

so comparing firefighters, police, and soldiers is the same as playing with snakes.. sure go ahead and keep believing that.

He was doing what he loved doing. Steve Irwin lived for the wild and dangerous animals and dedicated his life to protecting them and educating people about them. He has acheived a great deal and many advances in environmentalism and conservation have been made as a result of his work not to mention the enjoyment he has brought to millions of people.

He was brought up around wild animals - a passion passed to Mr Irwin by his own father. His wife shared his love of the wild animals and often joined him on his adventures. His children were brought up by a dedicated and loving father and from the Australian Prime-minister down, there has been nothing but priase for his parenting skills. Young though his children are, they will already have learned an immense amount about life from their father - far more than many adults will have done.

As for 'playing' with deadly animals, I hardly think it's accurate to describe his work as 'playing'. That's like saying a soldier plays with guns or a fireman plays with fire. Mr Irwin was a highly skilled person who knew the dangers and acted accordingly to ensure his safety and the safety of others. The accident that killed him was just that - an accident, and a freak one at that. He was killed by an animal that is not normally agressive and the injury he received would probably not have been fatal had it not been for the fact that the stingray's barb punctured his heart.

He was doing what he lived for, something he was committed to and something that has provided great benefit to both humans and animals alike.

Yes he was smart and his wife and kids can be justifiably proud of him.

It is no less smart than being a police officer, fire figher or soldier or any other risky occupation.

MANY jobs are inherently dangerous. It is in how the risks are managed that make these career choices smart or not smart.

Driving a cross country truck, full time, is statistacally more dangerous than Mr. Irwin's, but people still make a living, risking thier lives on the roads and highways. You, of course, make no suggestions that truck drivers make a less intellient choice of jobs. You express no concern for the children of these people, many of whom die by the THOUSANDS every year, just trying to provide for their families.

But then, you probably pass over the news stories of their deaths because you only seem to care about the children of celebraties.

When you consider that Steve Irwin provided his family very well, financially, then you cannot fault his choices, either.

that was his passion...and if he died then it was his time...yes it sucks and the children won't have their father, but someone is going to do it anyways...i don't understand how you can be so insensitive about this when he JUST DIED!!!!!!! everyone knew the risks, him, his wife, his entire family, his friends...everyone...why should he have to give that up? he shouldn't, lots of people are curious and he was the one brave enough to do it...plus he could have died anywhere, anytime, from anything...what if he would have been hit by a bus? this question wouldn't have even been brought up...

what about fire fighters, police officers, astronauts, soldiers, pilots, etc? they have dangerous jobs, should they all quit cuz they have a family?...NO!!!!!!!

people die in an instant, from uncontrollable things, for example, my stepdad, died in a car accident at the age of 32 and he was in catering and cleaning...he wasn't involved in anything dangerous and still died very young...have a little compassion, and be at least a little bit sensitive to other people's feelings!!!

leave this alone, and next time, give people at least over a day to mourn a great loss like this before asking and/or saying something soo insensitive!!!!!!!!

yes but if they died, their family would still be without them...so are they not as important?...do you only care cuz he was in the news and was a famous figure? he did what he loved, life is short, live it to the fullest, he was a GREAT man and he was lucky enough to die doing what he loved, his family will understand that!!!!! and again...if he would have died from a car accident would this even be mentioned? no

Is this a joke question? What do you think the soldiers in the middle-east are chancing being in the middle of hostility and War??
Though I know the soldiers are there because they think it is just and worthy (something that is brainwashed into American's minds in order to get them to join IMO) but Steve was also doing something instilled in him since he was born.
Look at it this way, would you tell a farmer, whose known farming all his life and is part of his heritage to stop doing what he's doing because he might get struck by lightening or fall under a columbine etc.?
Would you ask a miner to stop mining because he might get caught in a cave-in?(which happens more often than we think)
Steve loved his life/work and his wife Terri knew and joined in with his lifestyle as well. They knew the ins and outs of these animals and what dangers were when handling them and studying them also.
They have done so much in Australia to help and relocate crocodiles and done so much for conservation and awareness about all living creatures. And you can't beat his teaching abilities and enthusiasm he had for all these creatures, which many a child has become intrigued with because of him. RIP Steve Irwin~

people in the military have families is it smart for them to join the military knowing they may go off to war and not return home? (God forbid) My hubby is a police officer is it worth him goin out doin his job knowing he can get shot or any officer for that matter! It's what they do! They all know the risks reguardless if they have families or not! The spouse knows the risks, and they stand behind them knowing they may not return home, or may come home hurt! Anyone doing any job can get hurt or killed at any time! I feel bad for the families and all but there are risks with these jobs and they all know it! The kids may not have their biological father but some day she may remarry and they will have some sort of father figure in their life! If not I am sure she will do a great job raisin those kids!
So if you dont think it was smart of him to do what he did for living then I guess all the officers and military, etc shouldnt work cause their jobs are dangerous too!
It's just something to think about!
have a good night!

HIs wife knew what he did for a living when she married him. She also continued to work with him and support him. You are WAAAY off base with this question. He could have been killed in any number of ways. My husband died earlier than he should have, too. No one knows when they are going to go. I think it will be a blessing to his wife that he died doing what he loved. To me, that is much easier to take than watching someone suffer for months or years in a hospital bed.

And YES, I am answering your question. He did what he did with his wife's full approval. Why shouldn't he have continued on just as he was? Once you understand how short life is you'll understand why it's important to do what you love while you have the chance. Playing "safe" is no answer. Steve Irwin had years of experience at what he did.

Of course it was not a normally deadly animal that killed him, but one that kids are allowed to pet in some zoo areas.

And thier sting almost never kills anyone, so he was not with a normally dangeroius animal with this happened.
