I leave my job, and I go home to my mate, a male. should that cost me my job? my life?
I pay my taxes, drive maybe a little too fast, and go home to the person I want to be with, and who wants to be with me. who is hamed?
Equate race to sexual "orientation?" only in that some people use it as a deciding factor to deny me my rights as a citizen of this country, as a hard working (way too hard working, if you ask me) person, neighbor, or parent (well, I'm not a parent, but I could choose to be)
in my ideal world (well, not ideal. that would involve winning the lottery) I have my mate's picture on my desk, we can have dinner holding hands across a table, dance together, and go home (and promptly fall asleep, c'mon, we've been together 5 years)
my orientation is an aspect of my being that is different from "joe average" like asian eyes and brown skin.
I should not have "rights" because I'm gay. I should not loose my rights because I'm gay.

It can be equated because it is NOT choice!!! Why is that so hard for people to understand? I did NOT choose to be gay any more than you CHOSE to be straight!
As for why gays should be affored rights... we are not asking for special privileges, just the same rights given to everyone else. There was a time in this nation's history when people of color were not allowed to own property or to marry. There was a time when in this nation's history when women were not allowed to vote. Now, we are at a time in our nation's history where homosexual people are being discriminated against in the same manner.
In retrospect, we realize that those who suffered this kind of discrimination in the past did so unjustly. We now have the unique opportunity to show future generations that we know that all people are created equally, and all people in this nation should be afforded the same rights, regardless of sex, race, religion or sexuality.
The preamble of the Declaration of Independence states, "We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed, by their Creator, with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness."
It says nothing about all STRAIGHT men being created equal. And as far as I am concerned, the "pursuit of happiness" means that I should be able to marry the person I love, regardless of their gender.

Do you think lesbians and gay people enjoy being persecuted and ridiculed so easily just because of the choices that they make and in which they believe so firmly for themselves? Would you prefer if lesbians and gay people had their legal rights denied just because someone else didn't like who they slept with? Do you know what it's like to be stigmatized into a certain stereotypical image? Have you been made the butt and punchline of every lesbian and gay person joke, especially gay person jokes? Have you had anyone try to impose, instead of share, his or her views on you just because everybody else, or the majority, was doing it, but the practice of that person's views somehow made you feel uncomfortable, no matter what you did? Have you been personally attacked because some book, or some supposed higher being who may or may not exist, told you to? Were you told that you were wrong and sick and stupid because you did not practice a religion or you may not be very spiritual at all? Were you ever treated like you were less than human, that you were less of a person because others felt somehow superior to you because of who they slept with or how they conducted and carried themselves? Were you made to feel bad or ashamed just because you thought differently?

As I see it, this is more of a legal issue than a social one. The Constitution (our founding fathers) wanted us all equal protection under the law. Thus, people are afforded equal protection despite their sex, race, or national origin. These are all "immutable" characteristics, ones you are born with and did not choose. Once science proves that homosexuality is NOT a choice, then perhaps the law will provide us with the same equal protection rights -- the whole gamut of partnership rights, while includes civil unions, entitlements to one's partner's benefits, visitation rights, adoption rights, and all that.

Why shouldn't homosexual people have the same rights as any other human being? It's not just about sexual preference, imagine if you were not allowed to marry the person whom you loved with all your heart and soul, just because of, say, the way you dressed. Homosexual people aren't looking for special rights, we just want to be afforded the same rights that other humans enjoy.

The founders of our country intended for all of us to have rights. Nobody is equating gay rights with those of any other group, but only with those of the population as a whole.
Gay people should have the SAME rights that straight people have. And don't be silly and say that a gay man has the right to marry a woman. That's just nonsense. And harmful to the woman...think, she could be your sister!
All we want is to be treated as other people want to be treated.

You're looking at it backwards. Why should homosexuals be treated any differently than heterosexuals? Why should consenting adults of the same sex be prevented from entering into a civil marriage and enjoying the privileges of marriage afforded to opposite-sex couples in our society?
For Socrates: pedophilia, necrophilia, and beastiality are not examples of relationships between consenting adults, so they don't even belong in the same discussion.

It's the same thing. Back in the day, not all people were racist towards black people but some were. Now, not all people are like that with gay but some are. Being gay really isn't a choice.

It is not a choice any more than being heterosexual is a choice. I am g0y not gay that is my choice but my attraction is bisexual I cant help that or change it. I can control what actions I do and how I show my love and affection. I can not control who I love. Like my hair color or my eye color I can not change those things except superficially. I can't truly change it any more than you could change your sexual orientation. You could act gay I could act straight it doesn't change what I am.
