It really depends on whether the fireplace was designed or constructed to burn wood or just gas. There are both metal and masonry fireplaces that are built for only gas and are not capable of safely containing a wood fire. The best way to find out would be to consult a local professional with experience in the construction of fireplaces in your area. You can find local Certified Chimney Sweeps on the web at http://www.ncsg.org These professionals often can tell you lots of information right over the phone and other times an on site inspection will be required.
