might be possible - certainly easier by buy an internal and add the OS to that

certainly won't work to just hook up an external system disk from another computer for a plethora of reasons.

I would hazard a guess that the laptop is cheap because the drive crashed, hence your question. for what it would cost for an external drive you may as well just buy a new internal drive and do it right. It is possible to boot from an external but not all bios's (laptops especially) support that feature.
