The wealthy had tutors. They learned reading, writing, rhetoric, etc. Educated Romans spoke Greek.

schools traditionally ave been the province of the upper class.merchants taught their kids in the shop, and this frequently was an excellent education. today this would be called street smarts.
the traditional way of schooling was direct tutoring, with family members comprising the class
occasionally neighbors would join
classes of 10 or more were pretty much unknown until depth of education was desired.
the socaratic (socrates) tradition was more a give and take with the leader asked probing questions with the intent to stretch reasoning. true men of letters were expected to read and write multiple languages, with math and philosophy, the natural sciences, perhaps astrology/astronomy, history, religious studies, and warring tactics all added to some degree to round out the learning.
grading was more by consensus and how one did in debate amongst the peers than any other way.
