I need to be able to type text in a file I was sent by email. It is an excel file. I have gone to officeopen.org and downloaded the program there, but I can still only read the file. I have done something wrong? I actually need to be able to type in the spreedsheet I was sent.

Perhaps the file is a "read-only" file. If you open it and on the title bar at the top of the excel file there is the name of the excel file and it says read-only next to it (next to Microsoft Excel), then it is a read-only file. Close the file and try this:

1. Go to the place where you have saved the file. (In "my documents" for example).
2. Click ONCE on the excel file.
3. Click on "file" on the menu bar at the top, then "properties"--if there is a check next to read only (at the bottom of dialog box that opens), click on the check and click OK.
3.Open the excel file.
You should be able to make changes.
OR
1.Open the excel file.
2. Click on "file", then click on "save as" and save the file with a different name and you should be able to make changes.

Good Luck.

If you were sent an "Excel" file, and you have Excel in your computer, you should have opened and saved the file with Excel.
This done, it becomes an executable file and you should be able to edit or add to it.

If you do not have Excel, you won't be able to.

create a new spreadsheet and cut/paste the stuff into it

the originator of the excel file can put various security stuff on it to keep you from being able to change things - ofter will just "lock" it to stop accidental changes - look under "tools -> protection" if it says "Protect Sheet" don't do anything if says "unprotect" try that option.

The spreadsheet is probably protected. If you don't have the password to unprotect, just click the top lefthand square to select all, then copy and paste into a new spreadsheet, you will now be able to amend the data.
