They should need to see your license, there are 8 points and a fine for permitting an uninsured driver to drive and if you have no License then their Insurance will not cover you and someone at the dealership is liable so any prudent dealer will photocopy your license to protect themselves.
On the test drive, check the obvious, is it comfortable, can you get in and out, can you see out, particularly to the rear, can you cope with the clutch, dont test drive a 2 door if you want a 5 door dont try the diesel if you want a 1.2 petrol and remember those alloy wheels and sports suspension look lovely but ruin the ride so if that is what you are after then test drive that spec.
I have known someone test a 3 door buy a 5 and have major problems getting in amd out because the front doors are so much smaller, he had to sell it and get a 3 door, New cars always pull better than run in ones so if it seems gutless it will get worse. Not Rocket science.
One chap called at the dealership where I worked to pick up his new car and could not remember which one he had ordered, so it is best to arrive at the dealership sober.

It really depends on the individual dealerships you're going to and what car you plan on driving. I've only been asked for my liscense but some places go a little further. When my friend went to buy his Lancer Evo they dealership actually ran a full credit check on him before they let him go around the block.

all you should need is a drivers license, but if you are looking at test driving a ferrari or something, then you might need to know your bank account number as well!!

More than likely they will want to see your license but you could always take someone along with you with a license.
