Start on http://www.msf-usa.org/
take a class in your area (You need helmet, gloves, long sleeve shirt and over the ankle shoes). The class will cost $150 - $200 depending on where you live.
Motorcycles are a blast to ride but, you've got 3 limits:
Road Limits
Bike Limits
Rider Limits
I say this all the time, exceed 1 of the 3 and you may not like what happens.
Wear the right gear. If you can't afford the gear, don't buy the bike. I see guys buy $8000 bikes and want a $50 helmet. Your brain is worth more than that. Budget in the gear as part of your purchase.
Found an excellent website for you

First learn the terminology - When someone asks you, "do you have a rat bike or a rice burner", you'll know what they're talking about.
Read the "The Motorcycle Bikers Dictionary", "The Beginners Guide to Motorcycling" and "Maintenance Guide".
The Beginners Guide is excellent for newbies.

Then come back here and ask away!

Hi. I have ridden bikes for many years and I love them too. OK, first thing is to find a motorcycle riding school in your area. I mean first thing! And stay off the back of one unless the driver is experienced (I don't mean brave or aggressive.) When you are ready to research, look up "counter steering". It will save you. Look at mid-size bikes to start. Plenty fast enough, cheaper to buy and insure. Have a blast!!!
