"Experience teaches better than words"
You can get scared from a book, but life experience always tops it. Someone can give you great advice, but it does not sink in until you are in a situation that allows you to really appreciate their wise words of advice.

it means that first hand knowledge is better than someone saying that what you or someone else did is not a good idea. Example: lets say your mom says that the oven is hot and you don't believe her so you touch it anyway. you burn your hand slightly and you learn from that.
the man part is there because society thinks most men around now are rather dumb.

Take for instance a child that reaches up and puts his hand on the stove. He will learn quickly not to do that again. His mother probably said "don't put your hand on the stove" 100 times but he didn't take her advice. So in essence, you learn from your mistakes.

People only learn by experience. You can tell a child that fire is hot until you are blue in the face but until she puts her hand in a flame she won't really understand.

This means that you have to learn through experience, rather than someone telling you what to do.

What we fear motivates us more than just someone telling us what to do.
