I use to be a server. When I go to a restaurant I tip AT LEAST 20% if the service is good. If the service is lousy and there is absolutely no excuse for it then I tip $1.00. If the service wasn't great, but it wasn't the server's fault because the restaurant was too busy, or the cooks were slow and they seemed to genuinely give their best effort then I tip $4-5.00.
Don't listen to those people that tell you to double the tax! That is a lousy tip and people who do that should be ashamed of themselves and stay home and eat instead!
15% was the tipping standard in the US fifteen years ago. The standard now is 20% and it doesn't matter what meal it is. There are some people out there who need to learn some etiquette. If you can't afford that kind of tip THEN YOU CAN'T AFFORD TO GO OUT AND EAT!!!

These answers are lame.

I start at 30 percent. Any time I am at all unsatisfied the waiter loses 1%.

So If I put my empty cup down and the next time I want to drink it isnt refilled, that is a percent.
Then after I move it to the edge of the table and it isn't filled, that is another.
If they dont ask me about dessert/bring the check at exactly the rigth time (when I put my napkin on my plate) that is another.
If they dont follow the rules (serve the lady first, serve from the left, remove from the right) those are all dropping their pay.
If I catch them not being friendly, also bad.

This normally drops people down to the 20%ish area, and gives me something to do. Sometimes you will get a real loser and have to give them like 5%, or you skip over them and give the busboy the whole tip.

It's a shame your "rich" customers don't tip, but maybe it's not the custom in Australia. You have to remember that a tip is not obligatory unless of course it is include in the bill. In the USA this is usually the case for parties of 15 or larger. When my siblings and I go out (10 people all togther) we still leave a tip even though it is include in our bill. A tip is an extra "thank you" for the service you have provided and is left if the customer feels that the service was exceptional. In America it is customary to tip 15%. Our waiters and waitress rely on tips to make a full wage. You are extremely well paid for the job you do, count your lucky stars.

How Much To Tip Waiter

2016-10-04 04:55:11 · answer #5 · answered by ? 4 · 0 0

here in CA, waits are taxed 8% of their sales. it may be different in other states. this law was passed a few years ago.

so, the old standard of 15% means that more than half the tip goes to the government.

so, most folks here went to 18-20% tip for decent service. if you receive great service, tip more.

never leave less than 8 percent, unless the server was so incredibly rude that you had to leave the restaurant before the meal was over. if your waiter was really busy and didn't have time to cater to your every whim, that isn't neccesarily bad service, and if you tip less than 8 percent, that waiter actually had to pay to serve your whiny ***** ***.

other than that, 18-20% is considered a good tip now.

I agree a tip should be based on service. Everyone can't be big tippers. I think that's unfair to say stay home if you can't afford to tip big . Any restaurant or employee should be thankful for service and any tips. If there were no customer " their would be no tips" or no job for you. Be THANKFUL!!!! It has been several times I only had so much money left to budget the rest of the month but wanted to take my kids out to eat because they deserved it and couldn't afford to pay no more than a $5-$7 tip.

15 to 20 %

2006-09-05 12:56:22 · answer #8 · answered by Mr Harper 2 · 0 0

I always tip at least 20%. A server gets 2 bucks an hour and if you are the only table at 8pm, they were there setting the place up, breaking it down, and for 3 bucks would be a lousy day. It feels good to give a good tip too, and they will take care of u next time.

I agree with most of the others comment 15-20%. I am a waitress myself and most of the elders that I've served are still in their 8-10% rules. You do know that waitress only make $3.00 per hour and they got loads of side work they need to do besides serving that table right? If you are ever a server before you will appreicate other people serving u.
