its hard to say how to do it,what trans it has etc.if it dose not have a drain plug, then yes drop the pan.i do it by taking the bolts out all the way around except 4 in the front, just loosen them and the pan will drop in the rear.it wont drain it completely but will get enough out to drop the pan and it wont be heavy.change the filter, replace gasket.if you want there maybe a plug to drain the converter also.this way you get a complete drain.capacity is around 12 to 17 qts,(depending on trans)half of that if you just relace the filter.you might want to check with your service person and see if they have a trans flush machine.it will flush trans and no need to drop pan.just hook it up and let the machine do it.might be cost saving too.

Invest in a GM Haynes Manual these are better reading than Chilton`s and are based on a complete teardown and rebuild written in plain language you have a Chevy V-8 which is bolted to the turbo 400 transmission the process is remove the bolts from the pan at the bottom of the transmission but have a wading pool under it cause they hold a slew of fluid 20+qts and for goodness sake while you got the pan off replace the filter! You got it. Loosen bolts leave one in. Let pan drop one corner. Get a BIG drain pan.
