For a southerner, a yankee is someone from one of the northern states that fought in the civil war. For the rest of the world, all Americans are considered yankees.

It's a term that refers to a New Englander (In case you don't know what states make up the New England region: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont). It's sometimes also used to refer to a New Yorker fan of the New York Yankees.

The British call all americans yanks
the southern states call the people from the northern states yankees.
and for the people of new england(especially the boston area) a yankee is a no good bum that plays for the evil empire of george steinbrenner.

Most Southerners consider anyone above the Mason-Dixon line a Yankee. They have called me a Yankee and I am Canadian. I don't really get it :)

I live in the South and was born in Belgium, north East Flanders that is so what does that make me? They have not figured it out yet in these parts. Guess I will have to live here another 30 years before they do.
