Ron (if that is really you),
In my book you already ARE a serious actor. In addition to your obvious talents you also have "serious" comedic skills. Is that an oxymoron? You know what I mean. You're a very funny guy. So if by serious you mean Shakespeare then no, but you could be really great in a comedy.
Besides, I've already seen you in a few bit parts in several mainstream (albeit B-Grade) movies and you were pretty good, so why not go for it. Tracey Lords made the jump and she has far less talent than you (of course she's also much better lookingthan you, sorry Ron). Maybe you should give John Waters a call. He has worked with actors with stranger backgrounds than yours. You can make the jump if you really want to, just don't expect to win any Oscars.

Sadly I feel that you’ve been typecast and it takes quite a bit for any actor to overcome that stigma. One possible career move is to look into voice acting (look what it did for Mark Hamill) which will take the focus off your persona and move it to your acting talents.
You could also think about writing a script and putting yourself in it. Using your extensive experience you should be able to put together a great script. Then use your connections to sell the script to an indie studio and then you are on your way. You may never become a Hollywood Star but you could be the next Indie Darling.

It's never too late, but the chances for anyone to becom a serious actor are very slim.
