What % of bands/ singers would be awful without digital enhancement and modern studio effects?

Good lord. I heard a voice track from the vocalist from Panic At The Disco and it was worse than bad. Some morning show DJ got a hold of it and played it as a comedy bit this morning. It was the actual track. No joke. It was the vocalist from the band doing a track over some recorded music. But all you could hear was just him because it was in the studio. It had none of the digital effects to help him. Pitch was WAY off. Just entirely in the wrong key. Didn't sound much like the finished album product. I have seen some bands live and they just don't bring it like the album. And there are even techniques that can be used live. And they STILL don't sound as good as the album. And then there are the bands that actually sound BETTER live.

Depends on the genre, really - NOBODY in dance/pop would even EXIST without studio massaging, but most punk and metal artists are able to cut their (sometimes admittedly thin) mustard unenhanced, because the point is the energy, not the shine - commercial country, oddly enough, is another area where the turd gets an unusual amount of polish - for the producers & record companies, music is a product, not a passion, and moving units of this week's flavor is the entire point - musicians are trying to pay their bills & get some new socks when the old ones wear out, if it's a job, you go to work & put in your time, technique gets lost in the workplace, along with ideals & love...
...and nobody can touch a classical or jazz player when it comes to technique, anyway
