first you do 1096 minus 240. that leaves you with 856. if you divide that by 2 (# of days) you will get 428 and 428. but you have to add in the 240 you subtracted from that and you get 668 and 428. i dont know the reason you subtract 240 from 1096, but that is the way i tried and it worked.

I'll show you the work.

x is the first day.

y is the second day.
----------------
x + y = 1096 miles.
This says that the first day, plus the second day equals 1096 miles traveled.
x + 240 = y.
This says that he drove 240 miles more on the second day.

This is a system of equations.
x + y =1096
x + 240 =y

Since both equations have the same answers, both the x and y variable will be equal.

Solve and substitute.

x + ( x + 240 ) = 1096.

I substituted what we knew the y variable to equal from the second equation.

Solve this equation.

2x = 856.

x = 428

Now that we have x, substitute it back into the equation. I picked the second one, since it was easier to deal with.

428 + 240 = 668.

Note that as well, 428 + 668 = 1096.

Hope this helps you understand.

I always just sort of guess and check those sort of questions but the final numbers I came up with were 428 miles on the first day and 668 miles on the second day. They add up to 1096 miles and the second day's mileage was 240 miles more than on the first day.

X = the number of miles driven on the first day.

x + (x +240) = 1096
2x + 240 = 1096
2x = 856
x = 428

Day one = x = 428
Day two = x + 240 = 668
