Purely, in a prokariotic cell, DNA or RNA is floating in the cytoplasm freely mixed with the rest of components of the cell, whilst in an eukaryotic cell, DNA and RNA are enclosed in a nucleus which is differentiated from the rest of the cell by a membrane.

Prokaryotic cells:
* example = bacteria
* smaller than eukaryotic cells
* have smaller ribosomes (70s)
* have no internal membrane bound organelles
* genetic material floats freely in cytoplasm, no true nucleus
* has a polysaccharide cell wall (not cellulose)
* has slime capsule
* contains some organelles not found in eukaryotic cells e.g. mesosomes
* may contain pilli or flagellae on surface
Eukaryotic cells:
* example = animal, plant and funghi
* bigger
* may or may not have a polysaccharide cell wall - cellulose in plants, chitin in funghi
* has membrane bound organelles such as a true nucleus, endoplasmic reticulum, and mitochondria
* has larger ribosomes (80s)

Prokaryotes are found in bacteria. They always have a cell wall but do not have a nucleus.
Eukaryotes are found in everything else (plant cells, animal cells). They don't have a cell wall (except plant cells and fungi),
but do have a nucleus.
